Rate limits and quotas

Two per-minute ceilings, one monthly allowance, and how each refuses.

Per minute

Every call is counted against two ceilings: your credential's, and your institution's as a whole. Exceeding either answers 429 with a Retry-After header. Issuing more credentials does not raise the institution ceiling.

Refused calls are counted too. A client retrying a request that cannot succeed will back off harder, not be forgiven.

Per month

Your institution's plan may cap how many calls it can make in a calendar month. The call past the cap answers 409 PLAN_LIMIT_REACHED and names the limit, the maximum and what is already used. Sandbox calls do not count, and neither do calls refused at admission.

Funding

A production call is refused with 409 SERVICES_STOPPED when the institution's trial credit, wallet and card cannot cover it, or when billing has restricted the account. This is a conversation with the institution, not something a retry will fix.

Knowing where you stand

GET /me reports your per-minute ceiling, your monthly allowance and how much of it is used. GET /usage breaks the month down by endpoint, outcome and service.
